Design a world-class user interface that justifies the brilliant technology and hardware that makes the system. TracASSET should be extremely intuitive to use. Users should not need heavy training or a user manual in order to make use of the system — then we would have failed. Usability is a top priority. We aim to be the best in the enterprise market when it comes to usability and user experience design.

My role

I was engaged in TracASSET as a consultant in Capgemini in 2014. Since then I have been the lead designer on the TracASSET project. I'm privileged to work with some of the brightest minds in the industry. Together we're developing the product from prototypes to useful features, through continuous improvement and efficient delivery.

I am designing and presenting my work in front of executives, senior stakeholders, subject matter experts in Capgemini, and all members of the team throughout the project lifecycle.

Design methodology

We are using Capgemini’s proven design methodology — Rapid Design & Visualization. This is an agile methodology for prototyping new business applications. It helps IT projects to succeed by putting the focus on the end result rather than the process. This is achieved by doing very early simulations of that end result.

The design process

We have adopted the core model as part of how we work. The core model is a term that information architect Are Halland first introduced in 2007. In brief, it is about designing from the inside out, focusing on the main tasks that users will perform. We put a lot of time and effort in identifying actual needs. All design decisions are seen in the context of business objectives and user tasks.

In the initial phase there was a need to develop and refine style guides and a common visual language. This was a challenging task, but the effort paid off eventually. A good visual framework combined with a solid front-end boilerplate, has enabled us to convert low-fidelity sketches into high-fidelity prototypes quickly and efficiently.

TracASSET - Rig Site Management

We use Bootstrap (LESS), AngularJS and Highcharts for high-fidelity prototyping. This is effective as long as we have made a good groundwork with low-fidelity sketches ahead. We use Git for version tracking and deployment, which enable us to push prototypes to a separate design branch. This enables us to test and validate the design against business objectives and user tasks.

After validating the various bits and pieces of the system, each feature can be merged separately into a develop branch. This has proven to be an effective delivery model from prototype design to software engineering.

Product launch

A pilot release of TracASSET 3.0 was launched last winter. The pilot was successfully deployed and tested at selected TracID customers.

The official launch of TracASSET 3.0 was released July 2015.

The Capgemini team consisted of the briliant Lars-Kristian Hagen, Geir-Ove Bøe, Anders Malmo, Jarle Tronerud, Morten Taksrud and myself. Kjetil Hansen from TracID was the product owner.
